Cyanobium Genome Site
Cyanobium
gracile PCC 7001
PCC 7001 is a strain of Cyanobium gracile isolated from
intertidal mud at City Island, New York and maintained by the Pasteur
Culture Collection. This organism is part of Cluster 5 (See
Bergey's Manual), and was formerly identified as Synechococcus and Anacystis marina, though it is now
known to be part of a distinct group. Cells occur singly and are
non-motile.
This organism pccupoes a unique position in the evolution of Synechoccus type cyanobacteria,
occuring phylogneetically between obligately freshwater and marine
strains. PCC 7001 is a marine strain, although it also can tolerate freshwater
medium. Our interests in this strain include RubisCO operon genes
and genes allowing adaptation to freshwater and marine habitats.
PCC 7001 has been selected for
genomic sequencing as part of the second
phase of the George
and Betty Moore
Foundation's Microbial
Genome Sequencing Project. The Venter Institute will provide
the draft genome and autoannotation, and my lab will be responsible for
closing the genome, conducting the manual annotation review, and
comparitive genomic analyses between this organism and other marine and
freshwater cyanobacteria
